Snoring is caused by vibrations of the floppy tissues in the throat as air passes through when breathing during sleep. It is similar to the sound caused by the flapping of a flag in windy conditions. Typically, the vibrating structure is the soft palate, which can be seen dangling at the back of the throat, but there may be other contributing factors making a comprehensive assessment of snoring more complex than simply looking at the soft palate. Snoring can also be a symptom of Sleep Apnoea.
